Unimodular gravity: a fresh new look into the cosmological constant problem

Dr. Cristóbal Corral Badiola

Observational data coming from type Ia supernovae and cosmic microwave background suggest that the Universe is passing through a phase of accelerated expansion. The simplest explanation is to add the cosmological constant to Einstein’s field equations, even though its microscopic nature is not well understood from a quantum theory viewpoint. Due to this, different proposals have been suggested to address the late-time dynamics of the Universe, while dispensing on the cosmological constant. In this talk, we will review an approach suggested by Einstein himself—dubbed unimodular gravity—, based upon a restricted diffeomorphism invariance rather than extra fields. Their cosmological consequences regarding
the late-time acceleration of the Universe will be highlighted.
